In the year 1977, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Fort Atkinson community, with permission of the Iowa State Preserves Advisory Board, organized a frontier rendezvous to re-enact life as it was in the 1840s.
This year marks the 41st Fort Atkinson Rendezvous and will be held on September 23th and 24th. It is always the last weekend in September. The fort, built in 1840, was used for years to house soldiers. It closed in 1840 and fell to disrepair, but the community rallied to restore it.
This year's theme is "Powder Magazine" remembering that structure's importance for the soldier's weapons. The double-walled structure was one of 10 buildings in the fort itself with 14 sructures located beyond the walls.
Each day the fort opens to the public at 9:30 a.m. with a Cannon Drill. Attached is the flyer with the full schedule of events.
Events include a walk and run Saturday and the annual performances by the Country Road Players.
There will also be a military camp, hunters and trappers, a blacksmith, kids games, shooting and bow among the events.
