    We will gather at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa for the convention on June 22 - 28, 2018.

    Artists will have an opportunity to gather in painting communities, share style ideas, take classes, visit the Vesterheim museum, take in the sights around Decorah (including the famous Eagles), as well as having many opportunities to grow in their craft.

    We reserved a dorm that holds 250 for our attendees, which is located directly across from the main building that has 12 classrooms. This is where most of our classes will be held. Right next door, the Centennial Union will house the vendors for this groundbreaking event. Our breakfast and lunch will be served in this building as well.

    We will have access to the Vesteheim 2018 Rosemaling Exhibit and tour the museum as part of the week. The conference will also feature one special evening event, “A Night at the Museum.” It will be a unique opportunity for our national rosemaling family.

    The rooms and the meals are reasonably priced. The event promises to be educational, a way to network and connect with fellow artisans, as well as create a get-a-way to improve your craft.

    We've had such success the past 2 years, we're doing it again! Please join us as we raise funds for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research!

    Over the past two years, the Logan's Hope 5K has raised almost $25,000 dollars for the Muscular Dystrophy Association to be used for DMD research!!! Logan is currently in a clinical trial, in part because of money that's been raised for Duchenne research!

This year we’ll be serving up a wholesome breakfast complete with Dad's Belgian Waffles, sausage and of course delicious dairy products including milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream, that’s all been produced and processed right here in Northeast Iowa. There will be plenty of activities to keep you busy on the farm including:

    • Guided tram tours around the farm
    • Hand milking a cow
    • Petting calves at the petting zoo
    • Story time with the Dairy Princess
    • Bouncing in the cow inflatable
    • Playing in the corn pools
    • Watching robots milk cows
    • Checking out the Iowa Dairy Museum and Hall of Breeds
    • Visiting several educational exhibits

    This year’s festive “Nisse inspired” flower and horticulture show will be held at Laura HjelleHoeg’s childhood home, the Hjelle brick house near Siewer Springs and the DecorahFish Hatchery. Examples of Laura’s paintings in the Scandinavian style still remain in the property for your viewing.

    The theme for this year’s flower show was inspired by the 2017 book release, “The Curve of Her Life, Folk Artist, Laura HjelleHoeg” by Carol Hoeg Oliver, Laura’s daughter. As an added component, Carol will also be present at the show to share stories and to autograph her book.

    A beverage and a tasty treat will be provided as you relax in this tranquil, Siewer Springsvalley setting.

    A suggested donation of $10 will support Town and Country Garden Club’s beautification efforts towards Decorah’s public gardens, tree planting, conservation, and educational projects.

    The theme for this year’s flower show was inspired by the 2017 book release, “The Curve of Her Life, Folk Artist, Laura HjelleHoeg” by Carol Hoeg Oliver, Laura’s daughter. As an added component, Carol will also be present at the show to share stories and to autograph her book.

    A beverage and a tasty treat will be provided as you relax in this tranquil, Siewer Springsvalley setting.

    A suggested donation of $10 will support Town and Country Garden Club’s beautification efforts towards Decorah’s public gardens, tree planting, conservation, and educational projects.

    The Ultimate Norseman Competition

    Athletics play an important role in the Scandinavian cultures. Strength, stamina and a strong stomach are all traits of the Norse. Festers who participate in the three Saturday events of the Elveløpet 5K or 15K run, Nordic Rock Throw, and the famed Lutefisk eating contest will have their results combined to face off with other Ultimate Norsemen!

    Mölkky is a yard game that involves throwing a wooden baton at pins to accumulate points. The rules of the game are simple and anyone of any ability or age can play. Finland has a large Mölkky following with many clubs and tournaments, along with the world championships. Tournament starts at 4 p.m. and is open to anyone from ages 8 to 80.

    Elveløpet 5K Run/Walk and 15K Run: Decorah’s City Hall (400 Claiborne Dr) -- Saturday, 7:30am

    Decorah’s “River Run” race course along the Upper Iowa River and surrounding area highlights the natural beauty that Northeast Iowa has to offer. Hydration stations are provided along the course with fruit and drinks available at the finish line. Early Registration ends on Wed., July 25th. Final registration accepted Thursday/Friday 10am–5pm at the Decorah Chamber of Commerce, Friday 6pm–8pm at Decorah City Hall, and Saturday 6am–7am at the Beverage Garden tent.

    Nordic Rock Throw: Decorah Middle School field - Saturday, 1pm

    There are three weight classes for men (50 lb. rock for up to 160 lbs.; 75 lb. rock for 161-210 lbs.; 100 lb. rock for over 210 lbs.) and 1 weight class for women (50 lb. rock for all weights). Must be at least 18 years of age. Entry fee: $2.00.

    Kanoløpet: OFF The Driftless (212 Pulpit Rock Rd)  --  Friday, 6:30pm

    Registration: Chamber of Commerce by 5pm Friday
    The Kanoløpet is a canoe race from OFF The Driftless to the Twin Bridges located on 5th Street. The race will have two canoe divisions determined by the combined ages of the participants in each canoe (2/canoe max) and a third division for kayaks. Canoe teams with a combined age of 35 and under will be in the youth division, while 36 and up will compete in the adult division. The first canoe to pass under the Twin Bridges will be declared the winner. Cost is $30 per person and includes canoe rental, life jackets, and paddles. Those who provide their own canoe may enter for $20 per person.

    Kubb Tournaments: Decorah Middle School field  --  Saturday, times below

    Kubb is a lawn game where the object is to knock over wooden blocks, known as kubbs, by throwing, by throwing wooden batons at them. Play takes place on a small rectangular playing field, known as a pitch. Kubbs are placed at both ends of the pitch, and the king, a larger wooden block, is placed in the middle of the pitch. Some rules vary from country to country and from region to region, but the ultimate object of the game is to knock over the kubbs on the opposing side of the pitch, and then to knock over the king, before the opponent does. Tournament is open to all ages.

    Vintage Baseball Game: Decorah High School baseball field  -- Saturday, 2pm

    Come watch the Driftless Dodgers put on an exhibition of vintage baseball. The game is a blast from the past, featuring teams playing by the rules of 1860 and wearing uniforms from the time period. Among the different rules are a ball caught off one bounce is an out, the pitcher doesn’t try to throw strikes, no leading off the base and balls hit over the fence (home runs in modern rules) can be retrieved for an out.

    Lutefisk Eating Contest: Courthouse Square  --  Saturday, 3pm

    Put your lutefisk eating skills to the test in this competition. No registration or fee, just show up ready to down that lutefisk!

    Main Events

    Opening Ceremonies: Courthouse Square --  Thursday, 6:45pm–8pm

    Opening Ceremonies kick off Nordic Fest each year. Enjoy a presentation of flags, opening remarks, singing of the United States and Norwegian national anthems, and entertainment by performers such as Nordic Dancers and Luren Singers.

    Arts & Crafts Center: Decorah Middle School  --  Friday, 9am–5pm & Saturday, 9am–4pm

    A main event of Nordic Fest since 1974, the Arts & Craft Center is bustling with activity with 30+ artisans from the region. Here you’ll find Scandinavian themed wooden figurines, ceramic, fabric and wood gnomes, Hardanger embroidery, rosemaling art, Nordic folk art, Norwegian needle craft, American girl doll clothes, jewelry, soaps and lotions, fabric quilted runners, fabric wall art, machine embroidery, and much more.

    Grand Parade: Water Street (downtown) --  Saturday, 10:30am–12:30pm

    Bring your lawn chairs and find the perfect spot along Water Street in downtown Decorah. Come early—this is a popular event! Enjoy an old-fashioned, small-town parade filled with music, treats, floats, firetrucks, and more.

    Bunad ShowHotel Winneshiek  --  Saturday, 2pm

    A staple event at Nordic Fest since 1973, the Bunad Show enables Festers to experience the diversity of traditional Norwegian folk costumes. Marvel at the intricate handiwork and rich history of these unique clothes worn by volunteer models.

    FireworksAthletic Fields near City Hall -- Saturday, 10pm

    We end each Nordic Fest with a bang—literally! Bring lawn chairs or a blanket and settle down for amazing fireworks display along the Upper Iowa River. Not to be missed!

    Head over to the Beverage Garden after a day of Festing to take in amazing music, meet other Festers, and enjoy a cold beverage. $5 cover charge for Beverage Garden entertainment for Friday and Saturday night. One wristband will get you in both nights—available at the gate.

    Nordic Fest is a fun event for the whole family! Cool off at the “Troll Badeland,” be mesmerized by Kevin, our very own balloon artist, stop by ArtHaus for arts and crafts, and experience all the other family-friendly attractions!

    Troll Badeland: Northeast Iowa Montessori School  --  Friday, 11am–5pm  --  Saturday, 1pm–5pm

    Splash around in our water play area for kids. Family-friendly zone with free sunscreen, wipes, and other Little Troll necessities. Indoor cooling, changing and feeding area available inside. No charge.

    Balloons by Kevin: Corner of Water & Washington  -  Thursday, 6pm–9pm  -  Friday & Saturday, 1pm–6pm

    Balloons by Kevin is the Midwest’s premier balloon artist providing twisting entertainment for all ages. Kevin says, “I am incredibly grateful for a job I love and to make memories for individuals and families.”

    Family Fornøyelse (FUN) Event: Congregational Church (behind Courthouse)  --  Friday, 11am–5pm --  Saturday, 1pm–5pm

    Activities for all ages: arts & crafts, STEM activities, toddler play area with bouncy house, ping-pong tournaments for youth (under 17) Friday at 4:00 p.m., & ping-pong tournaments for adults Saturday 4:00 p.m. Prizes!
    Air Conditioning, restrooms, baby changing and feeding area, family seating areas, and stroller parking. Food and drinks available for purchase. Sponsored by The Toy Jungle at Donlon Pharmacy.

    Nordic Fest is an amazing opportunity to try some Nordic sports, such as Mölkke and Kubb, and participate in the annual Elveløpet race along the Upper Iowa River. Will you be the next Ultimate Norseman?

    The Ultimate Norseman Competition

    Athletics play an important role in the Scandinavian cultures. Strength, stamina and a strong stomach are all traits of the Norse. Festers who participate in the three Saturday events of the Elveløpet 5K or 15K run, Nordic Rock Throw, and the famed Lutefisk eating contest will have their results combined to face off with other Ultimate Norsemen!

    Mölkky: Decorah Middle School field --  Friday, 3pm

    Mölkky is a yard game that involves throwing a wooden baton at pins to accumulate points. The rules of the game are simple and anyone of any ability or age can play. Finland has a large Mölkky following with many clubs and tournaments, along with the world championships. Tournament starts at 4 p.m. and is open to anyone from ages 8 to 80.

    Elveløpet 5K Run/Walk and 15K Run: Decorah’s City Hall (400 Claiborne Dr) -- Saturday, 7:30am

    Decorah’s “River Run” race course along the Upper Iowa River and surrounding area highlights the natural beauty that Northeast Iowa has to offer. Hydration stations are provided along the course with fruit and drinks available at the finish line. Early Registration ends on Wed., July 25th. Final registration accepted Thursday/Friday 10am–5pm at the Decorah Chamber of Commerce, Friday 6pm–8pm at Decorah City Hall, and Saturday 6am–7am at the Beverage Garden tent.

    Nordic Rock Throw: Decorah Middle School field - Saturday, 1pm

    There are three weight classes for men (50 lb. rock for up to 160 lbs.; 75 lb. rock for 161-210 lbs.; 100 lb. rock for over 210 lbs.) and 1 weight class for women (50 lb. rock for all weights). Must be at least 18 years of age. Entry fee: $2.00.

    Kanoløpet: OFF The Driftless (212 Pulpit Rock Rd)  --  Friday, 6:30pm

    Registration: Chamber of Commerce by 5pm Friday
    The Kanoløpet is a canoe race from OFF The Driftless to the Twin Bridges located on 5th Street. The race will have two canoe divisions determined by the combined ages of the participants in each canoe (2/canoe max) and a third division for kayaks. Canoe teams with a combined age of 35 and under will be in the youth division, while 36 and up will compete in the adult division. The first canoe to pass under the Twin Bridges will be declared the winner. Cost is $30 per person and includes canoe rental, life jackets, and paddles. Those who provide their own canoe may enter for $20 per person.

    Kubb Tournaments: Decorah Middle School field  --  Saturday, times below

    Kubb is a lawn game where the object is to knock over wooden blocks, known as kubbs, by throwing, by throwing wooden batons at them. Play takes place on a small rectangular playing field, known as a pitch. Kubbs are placed at both ends of the pitch, and the king, a larger wooden block, is placed in the middle of the pitch. Some rules vary from country to country and from region to region, but the ultimate object of the game is to knock over the kubbs on the opposing side of the pitch, and then to knock over the king, before the opponent does. Tournament is open to all ages.

    Register in advance online, $40 entry fee, check-in 8–9am, play begins at 9am.
    After the Parade Tournament
    Registration on site 10am–1pm, No entry fee, play begins at 1:30.

    Vintage Baseball Game: Decorah High School baseball field  -- Saturday, 2pm

    Come watch the Driftless Dodgers put on an exhibition of vintage baseball. The game is a blast from the past, featuring teams playing by the rules of 1860 and wearing uniforms from the time period. Among the different rules are a ball caught off one bounce is an out, the pitcher doesn’t try to throw strikes, no leading off the base and balls hit over the fence (home runs in modern rules) can be retrieved for an out.

    Lutefisk Eating Contest: Courthouse Square  --  Saturday, 3pm

    Put your lutefisk eating skills to the test in this competition. No registration or fee, just show up ready to down that lutefisk!
